Lifecourse Nutrition & Health

The section conducts fundamental, public health-oriented, and applied nutrition research. We aim to create the evidence base for nutritional strategies which promote optimal physiological function and development, promote health and prevent disease in humans.

Our focus spans from pre-conception over childhood to adulthood in both high- and low-income countries.

The section investigates the role of diet and nutrition in foetal life, infancy, childhood, adolescence and adulthood in relation to healthy growth, optimal nutritional status, cognitive development and prevention of undernutrition, obesity and non-communicable diseases.

The section undertakes high-quality, large-scale randomised nutrition trials and observational studies. Our work includes investigation of growth, body composition, cognitive function, metabolic function, biomarkers of disease risk, dietary intake, nutritional status, and physical activity as well as interactions with microbiota and genotype. We focus on nutrition before conception and during pregnancy, infancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.

Our research covers nutrients (e.g. iron, vitamin D and B12, and long-chain n-3 fatty acids), foods (e.g. fish, insects, meat, dairy and wholegrains) and dietary regimens (e.g. breastfeeding, school meals, sustainable diets, and low-carb diets). In low-income settings, we also investigate nutrition supplements for prevention and treatment of malnutrition among children.
