Human Movement Sciences

With a focus on movement throughout life, the section explores how movement and physical activity influence health, development, and well-being. At the same time, it conducts research on sport and movement as social and cultural practices that shape learning, communities, and identity.

Research groups

The section focuses both on understanding the mechanisms underlying human motor control and learning, and on investigating and understanding the effects of physical activity and exercise.

The section’s research also aims to promote sport and physical activity among children, adolescents, adults, and older people.

We therefore explore the diversity of sport and movement practices. This includes examining the importance of creating meaningful experiences, fostering community and health, and developing organizational opportunities that are inclusive of people in vulnerable situations.

The section’s primary aim is to be a leading contributor, nationally and internationally, to research in motor control and neuroscience, as well as psychological and sociological sport science.

We collaborate with a wide range of research environments both nationally and internationally. In addition, we work closely with organizations from the world of sport, public administration, the healthcare sector, and actors within other educational and learning environments.

Motor Control and Neurophysiology

Research projects within this area seek to generate insights into the fundamental mechanisms underlying human motor functions and the interaction between neurophysiology and behavior. The projects also aim to understand the mechanisms involved in motor learning and to develop strategies that promote motor function and health. Finally, a key objective of this research is to gain insight into how these control mechanisms and adaptations interact with physical activity, development, and ageing.

Movement and Learning

Research projects within this area investigate how sport, movement, and physical activity affect motor and cognitive functions in children, adolescents, and adults, and how sport and movement activities interact with well-being, physical literacy, and learning. In addition, the interaction between movement and learning across school subjects is examined.

Sport and Society

Research projects within this area adopt a sociological perspective to explore the diversity of sport and movement practices. This includes examining the importance of creating meaningful experiences, fostering community and health, and developing organizational opportunities that are inclusive of people in vulnerable situations.

Our goal is to deliver research-based education that can make a real difference in practice.

The section therefore contributes teaching to the Bachelor's degree programme in Sport and Physical Activity.

At the Master's level, the section provides teaching and supervision within the Master's programme in Human Physiology, and is responsible for all teaching and supervision in the Master's programme in Sport Studies from the humanities and social sciences perspective.

In addition, we occasionally contribute to the delivery of PhD courses as well as continuing and professional education programmes.
