Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports is still ranked among the world's absolute elite in Sport Science
The Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports together with the Department of Sports Medicine at Bispebjerg Hospital – both from the University of Copenhagen – is ranked as the world's second best research environment within 'Sport Science', by the internationally recognised Shanghai Ranking.

Strong research environments and interdisciplinary collaboration
Nikolai Nordsborg, Head of the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, is very excited about the ranking: "Our position on the list is largely due to our strong research environments and their ability to ask and answer relevant questions within the field. We are also extremely pleased with our many interdisciplinary collaborations, including the one we have with Michael Kjær and the talented people at the Department of Sports Medicine at Bispebjerg Hospital."
He continues:
"As a result, our articles are published in the most important scientific journals, and our research resonates and is cited by universities all over the world. Of course, we are very proud of this. It is a direct consequence of our strategy to not only publish many articles, but also to publish the best."
The Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports and the Department of Sports Medicine have been ranked in the top three on the list since 2018. As in previous years, it is the categories “publication in top journals” and “number of citations” in particular that form the basis of our ranking.
Danish sports research is top-class
There are several Danish sports research environments on the list this year. The Department of Sports Science and Biomechanics at the University of Southern Denmark ranks number 6 on the list, and the Section for Sport Science at the Department of Public Health at Aarhus University is ranked between 51 and 100.
The criteria behind the Shanghai Ranking
The rankings are based on five different criteria within quality of research, quantity of research, and international research collaboration. The rankings are based on overall performance over the preceding five years – i.e. the rankings this year are based on results from 2018 to 2022.
