The University of Copenhagen is among the world’s best research environments in Sport Science

The Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports and the Institute of Sports Medicine at Bispebjerg Hospital – both departments at the University of Copenhagen – are among the world’s best research environments in “Sport Science” according to the internationally recognised Shanghai Ranking,

Every year since 2016, the Shanghai Ranking has published Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments, which compares the world’s leading research environments in sport science. Of more than 300 universities around the world the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, together with the Institute of Sports Medicine at Bispebjerg Hospital, have been placed third in the influential international ranking.

Highest score for publication of papers in the best scientific journals

On this year’s list the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports and the Institute of Sports Medicine are listed as the research environment that publishes the most articles in high impact journals. This is an excellent indication of the success of the departments in working towards the strategic goal not only to publish a large number of papers – but also to publish the best.

Ranking based on research

The ranking is based on five different criteria within quality of research, amount of research, and international research collaboration. The ranking is also based on overall performance the preceding five years - i.e. the 2021 ranking is an assessment of research 2016 to 2020:

1) The total number of papers indexed in the Web of Science

2) The total number of citations for all published articles

3) The number of citations per articles

4) The number of articles in journals with an impact factor in the top 25%

5) The percentage of articles that are the result of international research collaboration

This year Deakin University in Australia is ranked no. 1 and the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences is ranked no. 2.
