Estrogen Signaling and Cardiovascular Aging in Females within a Deep Phenotyping Cohort

Cardiovascular disease risk increases sharply in females during the menopausal transition, yet the biological mechanisms underlying this shift remain incompletely understood.
This PhD investigated the role of estrogen-related signaling in vascular aging, spanning molecular studies of estrogen receptor expression in skeletal muscle to integrated assessments of vascular function in humans.
The findings demonstrate age-related alterations in estrogen receptor expression associated with vascular signaling pathways and reveal substantial inter-individual variation in vascular function already in the late reproductive stage.
Central to the work is the establishment of the Women in Healthy Transition (KiSO) Deep Phenotyping cohort, a unique longitudinal study designed to follow cardiovascular agin across the menopausal transition and beyond.
