PhD defence: Addressing Overnutrition: Enhancing Nutrition and Physical Activity in Nursing Home Residents
A Community-Based, Participatory, Multi-Component Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial

About the PhD thesis
The aging population is growing, with increased longevity and higher rates of overnutrition, also among nursing home residents. This PhD project aimed to improve physical function and quality of life in older adults through a targeted intervention combining nutrition and physical activity.
The project included a screening model for overnutrition, an exploration of dietary factors, and a multi-component intervention. The research used a triangulated design: a cross-sectional study, ethnographic fieldwork, and a cluster randomized controlled trial in six Danish nursing homes.
Findings showed that overnutrition is prevalent, and many residents suffer from low physical function, malnutrition, and sarcopenia. The intervention improved muscle strength and quality of life, particularly for males and those with normal weight.
The study emphasizes the importance of tailored nutritional care and participatory methods in nursing home settings.
