The Health Change Approach to health coaching: theory, practice and applications in Australia and Canada

Foredragsrække "Coaching - forskning og praksis"

Janette Gale

Janette Gale, Health Psychologist and founder and CEO of Health Change Associates (HCA).

Janette is a leading authority on applied health behaviour change in Australia and Canada and has authored two text books on this subject.

Janette works with a wide variety of corporate and public health organisations to develop health coaching programs and train practitioners.

This presentation outlines the not-negotiable aspects of providing behaviour change assistance in coaching interventions and in clinical health practice. The focus is on working with a whole person as they progress through the various processes of the behaviour change pathway.

The approach is based on a multi-theoretical practice model that is flexible enough to help coaches and health service providers to exercise their unique theoretical and practical skill sets, yet systematic enough to allow them to know which theory or model to draw from at any particular point in time in a consultation.
It also provides measurement and program evaluation at the process level and methodological consistency across practitioners. For health service providers, it provides a way of balancing professional duty of care with the client’s right to make fully-informed decisions, taking their personal needs into account.

Applications using this approach from health organisations in Australia and Canada are discussed to illustrate the use of the model in practice.
