Brief Biography of Jens Meldgaard Bruun
Jens Meldgaard Bruun is a medical doctor (MD) from the University of Aarhus. He is a specialist in internal medicine and medical endocrinology and is currently chief physician at the section of endocrinology, Medical Dept., Randers Regional Hospital.
He started his research training in parallel with his medical studies and achieved a diploma in medical research during his pre-graduate years. In 2001, he completed his PhD thesis: Investigations over the production and secretion of human adipose tissue-derived cytokines and chemokines, and assumed in 2003 a post-doctoral position at the Dept. of Endocrinology & internal medicine, University of Aarhus. He has collaborated in national and international research groups, and co-authored ~70 papers in peer-reviewed journals. The research focuses on obesity-related low grade inflammation, with special emphasis on adipose tissue metabolism, inflammation and the interaction between adipocytes and adipose tissue resident immune cells. The research spans from basic in vitro adipose tissue research, over in vivo investigations on adipose tissue and whole-body metabolism/inflammation in relation to weight loss, to the effects of physical activity/inactivity in relation to adipose tissue/whole body inflammation.
Jens Meldgaard Bruun has supervised several master- and PhD-students. He has lectured at both pre- and postgraduate courses, including PhD courses at the Universities of Copenhagen, Aarhus and Southern Denmark. He has been a member of assessment committees for more than 10 PhD and 5 master theses. He is invited reviewer for high-ranking journals such as American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, American Journal of Physiology, British Journal of Nutrition, Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Diabetologia, European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, International Journal of Obesity, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Obesity, Obesity Reviews and PLoS One. He is associated the Danish Diabetes Academy at the WP on inflammation and type 2 diabetes, and acting as reviewer on PhD applications to the Danish Diabetes Academy. He has received honorary prices and been a member of the Key Scientific Leader Group in Denmark.
Jens Meldgaard Bruun is currently acting president for Danish Association for the Study of Obesity and was recently appointed board member of the Danish Endocrine Society. He has been a member of the reference group on MTV’s on bariatric surgery and on physical activity (both appointed by the National Board of Health), and has recently been a member of a national group working on new national guidelines for bariatric surgery (National Board of Health). He is acting as referee on the section on pharmacological treatment of obesity in Medicin.dk and has served on several advisory boards.
